European League of Football (ELF) Pre-Season Update: Kickoff Press Conference, 2023 Expansion Teams, & More

Kickoff Press Conference

In just 2 weeks, 12 franchises from 5 different countries will kickoff in the European League of Football’s second season. The league held a press conference with Commissioner Patrick Esume and CEO Zeljko Karajica on May 13th, to reflect on 2021, chat about the 2022 season, and even share some of their expansion plans for 2023.

The 1st game of the 2022 season will feature the Cologne Centurions hosting the Istanbul Rams on Saturday, June 4th at 8:00 am PT, with the game available in the US through one of the ELF’s GamePass packages.

2023 Expansion Teams Announced

The European League of Football has announced 3 expansion teams for the 2023 season, the ‘Milano Seamen‘ from Milan, Italy, the ‘Fehérvár Enthroners‘ from Fehérvár, Hungary, and the Helvetic Guards from Zürich, Switzerland.

ELF Commissioner Patrick Esume commented on the addition of these new teams, stating

“I am happy that we were able to reach an early agreement on entry for the 2023 season. Italy, Switzerland, and Hungary are not only highly attractive locations for the European League of Football, the franchises from Milan and Székesfehérvár also bring plenty of experience and infrastructure to play a good role. And I am sure that Zurich will do everything in its power to build a strong team,”

The league’s eventual goal is to house 24 teams throughout Europe, so adding 1 more team before 2023 begins should not be ruled out just yet. Regardless of if a 4th expansion team for 2023 will be announced or not, additional teams are expected to join over the next couple of seasons.

Players Signed/Re-Signed

  • Frankfurt Galaxy – DB – Jermaine Brealy Jr.

The Frankfurt Galaxy have signed former NCAA Division II defensive back, Jermaine Brealy Jr, for the 2022 season.

Brealy Jr. played 3 seasons at Pittsburgh State University from 2019 to 2021 and recently commented on his addition to the Galaxy, stating,

“There’s no place I’d rather be for my first professional season. Let’s work Galaxy!”

Head coach Thomas Kösling also commented on the Galaxy’s recent signing, stating,

“With Jermaine [Brealy Jr.], we have signed an extremely athletic cornerback who will be amongst the fastest players in the league because of his track background, Next to playing on defense, he will be responsible for some highlights on special teams as well.”
